30 de jun. de 2023 · Francis X. Talbot, S.J., was for many years America's literary editor, and later its editor in chief. He was also a saucy literary stylist who loved nothing more than a good argument.
Richard Francis Talbot succeeded to the title of earl, subject to the attainders, on the death of his grandfather, William Talbot (c.1643–1724) of Haggardstown, MP (1689) for Co. Louth. Having joined Nugent's (FitzJames's) regiment of Irish horse (1721), he was promoted captain (1729) and served in the war of Polish succession under Marshal Berwick (qv).
Brief Life History of Francis. When Sir Francis Talbot was born about 1500, in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, his father, Sir George Talbot, was 33 and his mother, Anne Hastings, was 30. He married Lady Mary Dacre on 30 November 1523, in Cumberland, England. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 1 daughter.
Biographical note. This collection is comprised of the papers of Francis Xavier Talbot, S.J., one time Editor-in-Chief of America Magazine (1936-1944). Father Talbot, a native of Philadelphia, entered the Society of Jesus in 1906. Completing his studies at Woodstock College (Woodstock, Maryland), he was ordained to the priesthood in 1921.
