In the 1980s the electronic soundscapes sculpted by Robert Rich could be compared only to Steve Roach's in terms of complexity and psychological depth. In 1982, Rich began to perform "sleep concerts", continuous flows of soothing and static music (a` la Brian Eno's Music for Airports ), such as Trances (1983) and Drones (1983), a form that he would then abandon till Somnium (2001).
