An illustration by Walter Paget of Robinson Crusoe which appeared in an 1895-6 edition of Daniel Defoe’s novel Robinson Crusoe, first published in 1719. The character was inspired by Alexander Selkirk, marooned on the Juan Fernández Islands from 1704 to 1709.

When I was working on my version, all I knew about the original was that an English artist called Walter Paget had created it and that its title was Birth of the Irish Republic. Once I was finished, however, and the limited edition was produced and put on sale, people kept asking for extra information.
Walter Paget și-a câștigat renume ca ilustrator de carte, deși el este menționat ca cel mai talentat din cei trei frați. Desenele sale pot fi găsite în cărțile lui Robert Louis Stevenson (în Comoara din insulă din 1899), Henry Rider Haggard ( Minele regelui Solomon din 1895) și mai ales în mai multe ediții în limbă străină ale cărții Robinson Crusoe de Daniel Defoe .
