  1. Shelburne, William Petty Fitzmaurice, Earl OfSHELBURNE, WILLIAM PETTY FITZMAURICE, EARL OF. (1737–1805). British politician and prime minister. Born in Dublin, Fitzmaurice (later Petty) joined the Twentieth Regiment and served at Rochefort (1757), Minden (1759), and Kloster Kamp (1760).

  2. The Fitzmaurices, of Norman origin, settled in Ireland in the Twelfth century. In 1692, the marriage of Thomas Fitzmaurice and Anne Petty, the only daughter of the scientist and philosopher, Sir William Petty (1623-1687) transformed the family fortunes. In 1751 their son, John Fitzmaurice (1706-1761) legally changed his name to Petty.

  4. WILLIAM PETTY FITZMAURICE LANSDOWNE, 1ST Marquess Of (1737-1805), British statesman, better known under his earlier title of earl of Shelburne, was born at Dublin on the 10th of May 1737. He was a descendant of the lords of Kerry (dating from 1181), and his grandfather Thomas Fitzmaurice, who was created earl of Kerry (1723), married the daughter of Sir William Petty.
