Mere weeks after Perry docked at Edo, the Russian frigate Pallada, captained by Yevfimy Putiatin, also arrived in Japan.

The first four of Bojanowska’s six main chapters spell out the novelist’s reactions to Britain, South Africa, China, Japan and Siberia (which he traversed on the way back from the Far East).
