  2. Dick Sheppard School, the L.C.C. secondary school for girls opened in Tulse Hill in September 1955. Considered to be a modern school with all the latest equipment, this view shows the magnificent Assembly Hall. The school was closed down in 1994 and the site redeveloped for private housing.   3. The founder of the Peace Pledge Union was Hugh Richard Lawrie Sheppard, popularly known as Dick Sheppard. He was a charismatic figure, a pioneer in a number of ventures, but always in touch with ordinary people. Surprisingly, perhaps, for someone so popular and down to earth, he was born at Windsor Castle on 2 September 1880.

  4. Its remnants were merged with Dick Sheppard School, which became, for the time that remained, a mixed school. Of all four schools, the only one to survive the rigours of improvement and shifting education policy was St Martin-In-The-Fields High School for Girls. Tulse Hill School closed in 1990, and Dick Sheppard School in 1994.
