Estudiante brillante, ganó una beca para estudiar matemáticas en el Newnham College de Cambridge, donde consiguió el denominado Part I of the Mathematical Tripos (cursos de tres años que llevaban a conseguir una licenciatura) en 1936 acabando el trienio como una “Wrangler” (estudiante con honores).
Após o fim da guerra, Joan ingressou no Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), serviço britânico de inteligência dedicado a espionagem e contraespionagem, onde conheceu o tenente-coronel John Kenneth Ronald Murray, com quem se casou em 1952. O casamento ocorreu na Catedral de Chinchester, local onde William Clarke, pai de Joan, morava.
