The month of Nisan is particularly significant as it is during this time that Passover (Pesach) is celebrated, commemorating the Israelites’ exodus from slavery in ancient Egypt. The month of Nisan, occurring near the spring season, holds its important significance in the Jewish calendar as the 7th month on the biblical calendar but the official new year biblically because of Passover (Pesach).
Nisan (or Nissan; Hebrew: נִיסָן, romanized : Nīsān from Akkadian: 𒁈, romanized: Nissāni) in the Babylonian and Hebrew calendars is the month of the barley ripening and first month of spring. The name of the month is an Akkadian language borrowing, although it ultimately originates in Sumerian nisag "first fruits".

Unknowingly, the onlookers in Jerusalem were witnessing God’s selection of Jesus Christ as the final Passover lamb. And take notice that this was the 10th of Nisan, the day that was designated to select the Passover lamb. The accuracy of God’s Word is astounding. Israel was seeing the perfect lamb – without spot and without blemish.
Thus, in Jewish tradition, the Hebrew month of Nisan is the “king of the months” and leads all the others; even the Hebrew letters that spell Nisan can be rearranged to spell the word “king.” So, while Rosh Hashanah is considered the civil New Year, Rosh Chodesh Nisan is considered the “new year for kings,” meaning that the years of a king’s reign were counted from Nisan 1 forward.
