Doctor Fischer of Geneva by Graham Greene. The story is narrated by Alfred Jones, a translator for a large chocolate company in Switzerland. Jones, in his 50s, lost his left hand while working as a fireman during The Blitz. Jones is a widower when he meets the young Anna-Luise Fischer in a local restaurant.

Doctor Fischer is a man who has nothing left to live for except his intense hatred of humanity. He organises a bomb party, where he tests the extremes that the greedy rich will go to so that they can extend their wealth further. This is an excellent short novel that accomplishes more in 150 pages than many do in 500.
