Sakhalin je proslulý zejména jako ruská trestní kolonie. V roce 1905 získalo Japonsko v důsledku rusko-japonské války Sakhalin na jih od 50. rovnoběžky a této části dalo jméno Karafuto. Po ruské revoluci obsadilo Japonsko celý ostrov a v roce 1924 se opět stáhlo.
