Hugh Craig Brown was born on 18 February 1911 and grew up in Glasgow. He took a three-year teacher training course at the Scottish School of Physical Education and Hygiene (later known as the Scottish School of Physical Education), based at the Glasgow Provincial Training College (later known as Jordanhill College), from session 1933-1934 to session 1935-1936.

Status and History of Jordanhill School. Founded in 1920, the school was run by Jordanhill College of Education as its demonstration school until 1988, and was known as Jordanhill College School until that date. Jordanhill is a community, comprehensive school. No fees are paid, and there is no academic selection of pupils.
