The University of Franeker was made famous for its students and alumni, among which we should mention: Lieuwe van Aitzema Lieuwe (Leo) van Aitzema (19 November 1600 – 23 February 1669) was a Dutch historian, diplomat, bon viveur, libertine and spy.
The University of Franeker (1585–1811) was a university in Franeker, Friesland, the Netherlands. It was the second oldest university of the Netherlands, founded shortly after Leiden University.
22 de ago. de 2023 · This remarkable university continued in its original form until it was disbanded by the French Emperor Napoleon in 1811 and eventually ceased operations even its in in Athenaeum form in 1843. However, the ‘ashes of Franeker’ remained smoldering as its enduring vision to harmonize science, philosophy, research and theology remained increasingly relevant.

Franeker (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈfraːnəkər] ⓘ; West Frisian: Frjentsjer) is one of the eleven historical cities of Friesland and capital of the municipality of Waadhoeke. It is located north of the Van Harinxmakanaal and about 20 km west of Leeuwarden .
In 1811 viel het doek, toen Napoleon de Franeker academie ophief. De prachtige bibliotheek verhuisde naar Leeuwarden, het academiegebouw werd in gebruik genomen voor de zorg van psychiatrische patiënten. De trots van weleer werd een herinnering. Meer dan twee eeuwen lang kon Franeker bogen op een in binnen- en buitenland beroemde universiteit.
