George Hamilton-Gordon was born on 28 January 1784 in Edinburgh. He was the eldest son and first of seven children born to George Gordon, Lord Haddo, and Charlotte Baird. George Hamilton-Gordon was Foreign Secretary 1828-30 and 1841-6, and Prime Minister 1852-5. He was a cultivated and well-travelled man and President of the Society of Antiquaries for more than 30 years. Queen Victoria acquired the Balmoral estate in Scotland mainly through his suggestion as the lease was owned by his brother, Sir Robert Gordon.

George Hamilton-Gordon was born in on 28 January 1784. He was educated at Harrow and St John’s College, Cambridge. Both of his parents died when he was young, and by 11 he was the heir to both a large fortune and a considerable estate.
