The Europeans expects you to meet it halfway. When you do, you're rewarded with a story that's rich with complicated emotions, despite its self-confident exterior.
The Europeans was born in 2017 out of two things: a shared obsession with podcasts, and a conviction that Europe was too often treated as something boring and irrelevant in the British news media. Our idea was to smash the idea that Europe was something dry and wonkish, with a podcast that talked about the continent's politics in a fun and lively way.
The Europeans was the first period drama Merchant Ivory ever made, and feels like the prime example of what their output is usually accused of being: beautifully made but lacking in substance. An outstanding feature is an interview with James Ivory, Ismail Merchant and Ruth Prawer Jhabvala that sheds invaluable insight into the production.
